Worship in the "Not"

It isn't hard to worship God when life feels like a postcard. When the sky is blue, the breeze is gentle, the sun is shining, and everything seems to be falling into place, praise comes naturally. Gratitude flows easily when the prayers are answered, the relationships are healthy, the finances are stable, the body feels strong, and the future appears bright.
Those are the moments that require very little faith.

It's the "not" moments that expose what's really happening in my heart.

When the sky is dark. When the rain won't stop. When the wind keeps blowing against me. When the heat is unbearable or the cold settles deep into my bones. When the diagnosis doesn't change. When the answer is "wait." When the door doesn't open. When the prayer isn't answered the way I hoped. When God does not seem to be moving according to my timetable.

Those are the moments when I discover how quickly my heart can drift.

Because here's the reality: we never simply drift away from God. Every movement away from Him is a movement toward something else. Anxiety, frustration, self-reliance, bitterness, fear, control, etc. If I am not gravitating toward Christ, I am inevitably gravitating toward a counterfeit that promises peace but can never deliver it.

That is why the "not" moments matter so much.

The "have not." The "cannot." The "does not." The "will not." Those moments tempt me into what I would call a cannot worship posture. Not because God has become less worthy, but because my circumstances have become louder than His character. Yet Scripture tells a completely different story.

From Genesis to Revelation, God's people are continually called to worship Him because of who He is, not because life is easy. We watch Paul and Silas sing hymns with bleeding backs inside a prison cell, and heaven responds. We see Job fall to the ground after losing almost everything and declare, "The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord." We hear Habakkuk resolve that even if the fig tree does not blossom and the fields produce no food, he will still rejoice in the God of his salvation.

At the same time, Scripture is brutally honest about the opposite. Men and women who had seen God's power firsthand still wandered. Kings who once walked humbly with God eventually bowed before idols. Hearts that had burned with passion slowly grew cold.
The difference was never God's faithfulness. It was where they chose to fix their eyes.

The faithfulness of God has never been dependent upon favorable circumstances. His character has never fluctuated with my comfort. He has never been more holy because my life is going well, nor less good because my world feels like it's falling apart. God is faithful;
always, and that truth demands something from me.

Not occasional worship. Not circumstantial worship. Not convenient worship.
Faithful worship. The Holy Spirit is continually inviting us to anchor our hearts to the unchanging character of Christ instead of the ever-changing conditions of life. He teaches us to praise before we understand, to trust before we see, and to worship before we receive. Anyone can sing when the sun is shining. The disciple learns to sing in the storm.

So maybe today you're living in one of the "not" seasons. Things are not working. The answers are not coming. The healing has not arrived. The burden has not lifted.
Don't let the "not" steal your worship. The God who was worthy yesterday is worthy today. The God who was faithful on the mountain remains faithful in the valley. And the Holy Spirit who sustained the saints before you is more than able to sustain you now.

Our assignment is remarkably simple, though not always easy. In every season, circumstance, in every high and every low... lean on the Holy Spirit, and worship anyway.
