Jesus answered, Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in Him
John 9:3
Why do bad things happen to good people? What do good things happen to bad people? We have all asked ourselves these questions. We see people that live good lives die in a horrible accident. Then we see crooked people who hurt others become extremely rich. Those are exaggerated examples. However, there are times we wonder about the justice of it all. We are not the first to wonder or to question these things. The disciples of Jesus asked Him plainly about a man who was born blind. Was it his fault or was it his parent fault? Jesus gives the only answer that is meant for all of us. But before we look closer at the answer, we should take another look at why bad things happen at all.
We are a broken people. God created us in His image and His likeness in a paradise. There was no death, no wrong, no hurts, no habits, and no hang-ups. He had one rule for us to keep, and we blew it. He told us exactly what would happen. "In the day you eat of it, you will die." (Genesis 2:17). That is the problem. We died, and we brought death into this world. We are interconnected with all creation and we brought sin and death into the world. In that moment everything broke and has been spinning out of control ever since. Every problem in the world can all be traced back to that moment.
But Jesus gives the real answer to our dilemma. Whatever problems, struggles, and sufferings that we face is so that God can enter in and reveal Himself to us. He is our solution. Bad things are still going to happen. But the amazing thing is that God has not left us alone to perish without Him. He has sent His Son so that we could be fixed. Jesus stepped into the world and showed the love of God to a people who had failed. He gave sight to blind, cured the lame, healed the sick, and raised the dead to life. Then He died for us so that we could be reconciled to God.
So when we see bad things happen to good people, lets not try to figure out why it has happened. Lets be part of the solution. God has called us to walk in good works. He has designed us to love others in whatever their situation is. We may not be giving sight to the blind, but we can give what we have been given and love as we have been loved.
Blessings to you!
