John 6 Part 4: Words for the Spirit

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life

John 6:63

Do you ever feel like you can't understand the Bible or what all this Christian talk is at times? That is because we are often listening with the natural part of ourselves. And the Bible says, "the natural man cannot receive the things of the Spirit of God because they are foolishness to him." (I Corinthians 2:14)

The Bible says that we are three part beings. (I Thessalonians 5:23) We have a body; we have a spirit; and we have a soul. When Adam and Eve disobeyed God, they died. But they didn't die physically. How did they die? They died spiritually. They experienced something that had never happened before. They were separated from God. They were broken. And we are broken too. We can see what our brokenness has done in society. And we don't even have to look at others. We can see it in ourselves.

But God didn't leave us in our brokenness without a solution. He came up with a plan. Jesus is the Answer to our brokenness. He came to renew us in the very image of God. (Colossians 3:10). He came to give us new life. The new life is a spiritual life. And Jesus spoke to the spirits of people that were with Him. This is what we mean when we talk about being "Born Again". We have to look beyond the physical and the natural to the spiritual and the supernatural.

This is the message that Jesus is always speaking. He told the woman at the well the same words. He told Nicodemus the same thing. God is Spirit and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth. This is exactly what Jesus was dealing with in John 6. He was talking about spiritual things. But the people didn't get it, and even those people that were called His disciples didn't get what He was saying and then they stopped following Him! When we place our will and our desires before the will of God, we won't get what God is trying to tell us. Because that is the natural person. We can't live in the flesh and have the things of the spirit. They are contrary to one another! (Galatians 5:16-17)

We have to walk in the words of the spirit by faith. When we trust Him and seek to do His will, then we will gain spiritual understanding and insight into what God is speaking into our lives. (John 7:17) When that happens we will find that we are connected with to Jesus and to others. That is when life gets exciting! Blessings to you!
